Limited Ingredient Dog Treats – Spotlight on Max & Ruffy’s and Barkwheats

Hello everyone!

I hope that your spring has been well so far and that your pups are in good health. Emma and Phoebe are doing well for now. Just a bit of mild itching, and Emma has her low energy days every now and again due to her Addison’s.

I recently came across two brands of treats that are focused on beneficial, limited ingredients and I wanted to tell you about them. I have placed an order with both companies and they should be arriving at  www.goodthingsgreenthings.com soon! I think they will make a wonderful addition to our pet section. Here they are:

Max & Ruffy’s

Max & Ruffy’s makes 6 different flavors of vegan treats including 3 grain free options. All ingredients are certified organic. Their packaging is biodegradable and compostable, even in a home compost setting.

Barkwheats

I was thrilled to find Barkwheats dog treats for so many reasons. They source all their ingredients locally (Maine), with the exception of their Fair Trade Ginger that comes from Belize. They use buckwheat flour in their treats. Buckwheat is a berry, not a grain making it safe for those with grain allergies. Plus, it is very low glycemic and safe for dogs with canine diabetes. It is milled on a buckwheat only mill, so there is no chance of cross contamination. Also, their packaging is completely biodegradable and compostable in a home compost setting! There treats are available in four  flavors:

- Blueberry & Lavender: Organic Buckwheat Flour, Organic Blueberries, Honey, Organic Canola Oil, Organic Lavender

- Ginger & Parsley: Organic Buckwheat Flour, Honey, Organic Canola Oil, Organic Ginger*, Organic Parsley. *Fair Trade Certified

- Pumpkin & Sage: Organic Buckwheat Flour, Organic Pumpkin, Honey, Organic Canola Oil, Organic Sage

- SeaVegetable & Chamomile*: Organic Buckwheat Flour, Honey, Organic Eggs, Organic Canola Oil, Organic Kelp Powder, Organic Chamomile.

*Allergy Note: If your dog is allergic to ragweed, you should also avoid Chamomile, as it is a member of the ragweed family.

I’m hoping to have the Barkwheats treats at Good Things Green Things within the next two weeks. I will keep you posted, and let you know as soon as they get here! I’m so happy to have found healthy, treats for our sensitive pups. I can’t wait to share them with you, and to hear how your pups like them.

Also, I just read something about a spoonful of local honey being a good remedy for allergies. I’m wondering if this would work for dogs as well. I’m going to look into it and I’ll let you knwo what I come up with. Take care!

OPS Update: 1 Month Later

Well it’s been a month now since we started adding Organic Pet Superfood to our dogs food. We stopped giving it to Emma mid-month, due to her systemic yeast infection. With that going on, she wasn’t able to absorb the nutrients anyway. I promise I’ll get something posted about systemic yeast infections within the week. I’ve just been so busy!

Phoebe, our little ratter is doing SO well on the super food. Her coat is the softest it’s ever been, and she is so full of energy. She wants to play all the time! The reduction in her stink breath has been my favorite improvement. She is actually tolorable to be around, it has made that much of a differance. It also seems to be diminishing the plaque buildup on her teeth, which I think is amazing.  I am so happy with her progress on this, and I love the fact that she doesn’t reek anymore. She’s enjoying the extra snuggles too, it has made her a much healthier, happier dog.

I plan to keep her on her maintenance dose of 1/8 tsp per day. Allergy season starts in August, so I think mid July I’ll double her dose to get her ready for the itchy/stinky/hair loss season. I’ll keep you posted if there are any other improvements between now and then. I plan to give it to Emma too, once her yeast infection is cleared up. I’ll let you know when that happens.
